Established in 1899 by local Cairns people to provide financial services for the community of Cairns, Cairns Penny Savings & Loans still occupies a prominent position in the finance industry and is one of the largest "home grown" commercial entities in Cairns.
Cairns Penny Savings & Loans has a mutual ownership structure - we are owned by our customers. When you open an account with us you become a member (shareholder). This gives you the right to vote at our general meetings. Unlike many companies, each of our shareholders has an equal voting power at our general meetings – we are not dominated by big shareholders. This unique structure provides us with the ability to focus on providing services rather than profits.
Since the people of the district own Cairns Penny Savings & Loans, and its policy is determined by Directors who live and work in the district, the decisions are based on what is best for its customers (locals), and not on what is most profitable for interstate shareholders or in line with the national policy of a conglomerate bank.
Many clients comment that they enjoy our good "old fashioned" personal service. We also focus on simple products that can be easily understood by our customers rather than fancy packaging for the same result. Our trained staff are committed to delivering personal, friendly service in an efficient professional manner. What’s more, we want to see our customers and you won’t have to pay us transaction fees to come in to the counter to do a transaction!
